10/1 - John Henry - A "Real Life" Character

Consider how to characterize John Henry or any other folk hero.

Draw inspiration from your hometown or region.  Can you create a character based on someone you may have known in real life?  A high school legend? A mystic? A wino or hobo who may have fallen from glory?

Create a character based on someone you may have known in real life or a folk hero.  Make a list of their attributes.  Write 150 -300 word description of this character. It will become a foundation for a story later in our class.

  1. Mr.Melvin, a misleading, smart wealthy man. To his peers masking himself as a hero, but subconsciously the mastermind behind a true villain. His evil desires became a reality starring as the magician in his very own magic show, controlling his peers like his personal puppets, pulling their strings as he decided their fate. Mr. Melvin grew up in a well known family in which all were well- renowned doctors and professors. Graduating top of his class as a pharmacist he centered his knowledge on living up to his family's name and legacy. He followed in their footsteps opening his very own pharmaceutical practice,The town referred to him as the “Healer” because of his ability to cure the incurable with his holistic treatments embedded in his family for thousands of years. Not only was he known as the famous “healer”. He was also known for his heroic memorable acts the night the town will never forget…By day an intelligent pharmacist, by night an egoistic manipulator.

  2. They say he lives on an old Christmas tree farm—fitting—in a humble little cabin up on the mountain. Despite his modest house and old pick-up truck, he is said to have a fortune. You could never tell, though. Not by the way he lives nor by the way he carries himself. He seems like a regular insider. The community embraces him because he embraces them.

His voice is smooth, kind, and calming; he is the kind of person you feel like you can tell all your worries to and he will offer kind advice without letting your business land on another’s ears. He is a listener, a comforter, and a friend to all. He is tall and lean with long white hair, the bushy beard and mustache to match, and a charming smile that makes everyone feel at home. His eyes, which are as blue as the ocean, have seen lands far away and people of all kinds. His experiences compel him to freely give with no selfish ambition.

But when he puts on the suit, the magic begins. Parents and kids alike stand in awe as children whisper their wishes to him and he pulls the very thing they ask for, right down to the color, from his sack. He laughs a bit himself, unable to believe that he is able to make wishes come true but grateful that another child leaves with a smile. Most people outgrow believing in Santa, but nobody in the community outgrows believing in the humble, yet amazing, Uncle Robert.
