9/3 - Try This 1.3

Please post your observations for Try This 1.3 on canvas.

Take a notebook with you to any public place and make a list of the proper names you find there (a graveyard, a candy. store, a restaurant, a street, a theater...) Write a paragraph of anything at all that these names, or one of them, suggests to you.

Comments

  1. Shang-Chi, Candyman, Free Guy, and Malignant. These are all names that I spotted when I was walking around the Fayette Mall. Shang-Chi respectively has a large impact than the rest of the upcoming movies. It symbolizes me growing up. Every year, since I was old enough to remember, my father would take my brother and I to every Marvel movie. For the past decade, we as a family have bonded over buttery popcorn and squeaky chairs. However, this year was different. I was away at college. I won't get the opportunity to watch this movie with family, because I grew up. People say part of growing up is letting go, and I've never felt that as strongly as I do now.

  2. - New Circle
    - Walmart
    - McDonalds
    - Arby’s

Having class online today gave me some extra time to do some much needed shopping. This included getting the groceries for the week, kitchen supplies we forgot when moving in, and even grabbing some special treats for my pup. Although as I was driving down New Circle to Walmart, I began to laugh thinking about this assignment and realizing what all these places mean to me. I couldn’t help but think this area would be the perfect place to write about, since only two weekends ago had I spent longer than I wanted to on this road. My car had broken down on New Circle and I had to carefully attempt to pull over. I managed to park safely in the McDonalds parking lot and call my uncle to help me out. After all was said and done, we got my car fixed up and celebrated with Arby’s. It was a very stressful day but one I will remember every time I drive this road.

  3. -barns and noble
    -Marin Luther king blv.
    -farm fresh
    -UK
    -no turn
    -Lexington rd.

Out of all these words I see the moment I step foot from my dorm, the simplest one sticks out. Lexington. It is just the name of a road and a city, but it means a lot more to me now. The time I have spent here, I have encountered so many new things, people, and experiences. Moving to a new place with thousands of new people can be a scary thing, but it has been the best thing for me. I love the school, the new friends, the city. It has given me an opportunity to see the world in a new light other than living in a small town with the same people for years. I’m ready to start a new chapter of my life here and see where it goes.

  4. List of Names:

    -Lexington Public Library

    -Phoenix Park

    -Fifth Third Building

All of these important places in downtown Lexington serve and have served a great purpose for our city for so many years. What really struck me about Phoenix Park in particular was its long history in the downtown area. What started as a Tavern in 1797 and a hotel a few years later, has now transformed into one of the major parks in our area today. I can only imagine the memories and experiences this park has held over the years and I truly wish I could've seen it evolve into what it is today. I think we often need to step back and look at the history of these places because it is truly amazing to see what life was like so many years ago. The thing that struck me the most is the name Phoenix. I have always thought this word had a very warm feeling to it which made me associate it to the pleasant memories that this place surely has.

  5. List (A Visit to Hamburg):

    Target

    Marshalls

    Best Buy

    PetSmart

    Barnes and Noble

Marshalls suggests to me: the enemy. A bit of context- I worked at Tjmaxx for my entire senior year of high school, and just down the street was a Marshalls. Tjmaxx and Marshalls are sister stores along with Homegoods, and we all had to sell credit cards. Since Tjmaxx and Marshalls sell a lot of the same kinds of products in their stores, it was a toss up which store would sell more credit cards that day/weekend. But we still had a quota to meet. So Marshalls is the enemy because any credit card they sold instead of us hurt our stores numbers, so I have always avoided shopping their even since leaving Tjmaxx for good with no intentions of returning and also no intentions of applying for a store credit card. It's kind of crazy how the mind works.

  6. All over campus, there are names of people representing dorm buildings, classroom buildings, and even the library. This list includes, but is not limited to, Don and Cathy Jacobs, William T. Young, Lyman T Johnson, and James B. Haggin. I feel as if it is very obvious that these people, or families, have donated money, time, and much more to this school. I am very thankful for what they have done to make the UK the way it is. Being in a program where I will be taking a lot of science classes, I am more than thankful for JSB and all the amenities it has. Along with this, no matter the major or program, I feel as if everyone takes the library, or “Willy T” as many students call it, for granted. The time I, and many students, have spent there is unreal. It is definitely one of my favorite spots on campus. To speak for all of the students here at the University of Kentucky, we are more than grateful for the access we have to resources, along with the amazing dorm buildings that would not be possible without these important people.

  7. Memorial Hall. I wonder how many people have said that name. It’s robust and symbolic and does not roll off the tongue, but it holds many stories and many meanings. It’s a landmark, a painful reminder of past hurts, and a place in which someone had classes or play practices or some other event they looked forward to with a twist of anxiety and dread. It’s a beautiful building. It points to the heavens and sports a classic-feeling architecture. I wonder how many students have gotten lost looking for it. I wonder how many friendships bloomed there. I wonder what the thousands of incoming freshmen each year feel when they look at it. I wonder what I’ll remember most about it when I am long past being a student at UK. Memorial Hall. There it stands, holding all those memories within its weathered walls.

    My list of words:

    Memorial Hall

    Hibachi Express

    Lextran Bus

    University of Kentucky

    Johnny Print

    -Brooklyn

  8. Lowe’s
    Walgreens
    Shell Gas Station
Ditto and Musick Eye Care Center
    James C Mason Park

These are the buildings I see every time I go home. Lowe’s is where me and my sister used to go houseplant shopping almost every week and have the best time just wandering around the garden center. Walgreen’s is where we took late night snack runs when we were having a bad day to pick out whatever snacks our hearts were craving and go home to watch “Pride and Prejudice” for the thousandth time. The Shell Gas Station has been there for less than a year but we have still gone there countless times to have photo shoots under the neon lights or just people watch while drinking Dr Pepper polar pops. The eye care center is where me and my sister found out we both needed glasses and she is legally blind in one eye, I still don’t wear my glasses but she kinda has to if she wants to ever drive. And finally, the park. Whether it was early morning basketball conditioning, running laps and suicides for hours, or playing ultimate frisbee with anyone we could find, this soccer field holds a special place in my heart. I even helped build the bridge that hundreds of people use everyday. This small corner of Nicholasville will always be my home, no matter how far away I go, the memories I have of this place are irreplaceable.

  9. - Falmouth

    - Punkyville

    - Snappy Tomato

    - William's Greenhouse

    - Sunset Drive

    - Harley Davidson

Today, I took advantage of the flexibility of online class. I was able to spend some time with my dad and brother. We went on a motorcycle ride together from my house on campus to Falmouth, KY. Harley Davidson has always held a place in my home. My dad is an engineer; tall, dorky, and socially awkward. He's not really someone you would look at and think "yeah, that guy drives a Harley." But motorcycles have always held a place in his heart. It's rare to see him in a t-shirt that isn't from some Harley store around the country. I think he loves them so much because of the sense of freedom that comes from cruising down backroads on a sunny day. You have a huge engine roaring under you, but you're in control. Something about that just makes you feel alive. It's impossible to not feel cool when you are turning every head on the road, and demanding attention. It's a simple joy, really. One that I hope I can continue to share with them for many more years.

  10. • Marine Layer
    • Pottery Barn
    • Steel City
    • Shake Shack
    • Arhaus
    • Sugarboo
    • The Barrel

A name I think sticks out to me the most is “Marine Layer”. I love the ocean and traveling meaning that this name reminds me being like in California or somewhere where there is a marine vibe. This is a store and it is from San Francisco so I like the feelings of just being in the store as it makes you almost feeling what the name of the store is. This makes my writer self want to be able to give the readers of my writings the same feeling. I want to make them feel connected to what they are reading and want them to get pulled into it by just like the title. Just as we been talking about how the cover of a book can help you figure out what the book is, the title is just as important. All of these names made me really think about how these name truly describe what the store, restaurant, or place is. It is the first thing you look at when you are new or just walking around. Sometimes I find myself not going into a place because the name isn’t convincing and sometimes I don’t think about that. Writing gives you moments to focus on one thing at a time and you get to be in deep thought about one topic.

  11. DeWalt
    Behr
    Deere
    Husky
    Rigid

My roommates and I are building a table for our living room, so we went to Home Depot and I thought that it would be a good opportunity to complete this assignment. These are just a few proper names of brands that I saw, and they all have a similar tough sounding names. When buying a product for any building project, consumers are most likely to buy a product that they perceive as being the strongest and most reliable to get the job done, so it makes sense that these companies would select rugged sounding names. Three of these proper names give the impressions of animals, Behr, Deere, and Husky, all of which are large, strong, and gritty animals. The other two, DeWalt and Rigid, still give an impression of strength through DeWalt sounding a bit like “wall” as well as ending with a hard “T” sound, and then for the second, things that are Rigid are naturally sturdy and strong. Overall, these names suggest strength and durability which is important in the construction of something like a table.

  12. Fox Ridge Drive
    Eden Ridge Drive
    Parkland Ridge Drive
    Austin Ridge Drive

These are all street names from Cincinnati Ohio. As I was driving through the suburbs over the long weekend I copied down these street names because they were very similar to each other. So, I did a little bit of digging and their names all end with “ridge drive” because they are designed and built by the same company. What I found interesting about all of these different neighborhoods was the close distance between them all. All of these streets are about 10 minutes max from each other. Another thing I noticed was how similar the houses were built. They were so similar to the point where you could tell that they were built by the same company. They are nice, decent in size, and unique in their own ways.

  13. Arhaus

    Brooks Brothers

    Williams Sonoma

    Lush

    Shake Shack

I just passed an Arhaus at The Summit, and this name stuck out to me the most. Firstly, it appeals to me because it's a very obvious play on words, but still sounds unique because it sounds German, which for a furniture store, can appeal to lots of people. The name feels inviting and comforting in a way as well.

The other name I like a lot is Lush. For a makeup place, I'm sure it is a good name for a makeup place because it sounds like it would be a high quality product.
